5 Uses of Bicarbonate Soda

Bicarbonate soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, it is a crystalline compound. It is a mild alkali substance and a versatile substance with several uses. Here are five (5) uses of bicarbonate soda.

  • Dental Health; bicarbonate when mixed with water to form a paste can act as a good cleaning agent for your teeth, it has natural whitening properties which are effective at removing stains on your teeth. Also, its alkaline properties help to neutralize acids produced by mouth bacteria, thereby reducing the risk of enamel erosion and cavities. Additionally, it contains Sulfur which can help neutralize bad breath. However, it should not be overused, instead, it should complement rather than replace regular toothpaste.
  • Skin Care; it can be used as a gentle exfoliant, it helps remove dead skin cells and unclog pores for smoother and brighter skin. This can be done by mixing with water to form a paste apply on the skin for 10-15 mins then wash with warm water and apply a moisturizer immediately. It can help dry out blemishes and soothe ashes or insect bites due to its anti-inflammatory effects.it is advisable to use twice a week as prolonged use may lead to dryness and irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin.

  • Baking; bicarbonate soda can be used as a leavening agent when baking, it is important to use when making bread, muffins, and pancakes, it helps create a soft and tender crumb, making your snacks light and fluffy. Additionally, it can neutralize acidity in brown sugar, cocoa powder, or molasses, giving a better browning and a more tender texture. Proper ratio is important as too much baking soda can result in flavors and hard textures.  
  • Antacid; bicarbonate soda acts as an antacid by neutralizing excess stomach acid that causes discomfort and irritation. It also provides relief from symptoms like acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion, when dissolved in water it is recommended to take ½ to 1 teaspoon for relief. People with kidney disease or high blood pressure should seek medical advice before using it as an antacid as it could cause side effects for them.
  • Cleaning; its mild abrasive properties are good for scrubbing grease and surfaces without scratching. When mixed with water, it is a powerful paste that can be used to clean sinks, bathtubs, and tiles. Since it contains alkaline, it can clean acidic stains like coffee, tea, and juice with ease. When mixed with vinegar it can help unclog drains.

In conclusion, bicarbonate soda is a very versatile and safe compound, when used as a treatment option, ensure you seek medical advice.
