Garlic is a bulbous plant that belongs to the allium family, it is closely related to onions, leeks and shallots. Aside from its distinctive flavour and aroma, garlic has a lot of health benefits to offer, such as immune system boost, and heart health amongst others. Here are 7 health benefits of garlic.

Antioxidants Properties

Garlic contains antioxidants such as allicin, selenium and quercetin, they help in neutralizing the free radicals in the body which in turn prevents and minimizes cellular damage. Some antioxidants in garlic have been studied for their potential role in preventing certain types of cancer, they help inhibit the growth of cancer cells and reduce the risk of developing cancer.

Immune System Boost

Properties like vitamin C and selenium found in garlic support the immune system, they help fend off infections and strengthen the body’s defence mechanism. Garlic also enhances the function of white blood cells, such as neutrophils and natural killer cells, which are essential components of the immune system responsible for detecting and destroying pathogens.

Detoxification

The sulphur compounds in garlic assist in the detoxification process by aiding the liver in eliminating harmful substances from the body which supports overall health and well-being. Garlic also promotes the synthesis of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant produced in the liver, it plays a key role in detoxification by neutralizing harmful and environmental toxins in the liver.

Blood sugar levels

According to studies, garlic can enhance insulin sensitivity, and this allows the cells to respond better to insulin, a hormone responsible for transporting glucose from the bloodstream into cells, thereby helping to regulate blood sugar levels. It also inhibits gluconeogenesis, a process in which the liver produces sugar, by moderating this process, garlic can contribute to more stable blood sugar levels.

Skin

Garlic may stimulate collagen synthesis which is vital for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing premature aging such as wrinkles and fine lines. The antioxidants in garlic neutralize free radicals in the body and reduce the damage they can cause to skin cells and collagen which is essential for skin elasticity.

Improved digestion

Garlic has been traditionally used to address various gastrointestinal issues, including indigestion and stomach discomfort, its properties may help soothe the digestive lining. It also stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, these enzymes play a key role in breaking down food in the digestive system, aiding the absorption of nutrients.

Antimicrobial Properties

Garlic antioxidants have natural antimicrobial properties, which help the body fight against bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, this in turn contributes to the prevention and management of infections. The primary antimicrobial compound found in garlic is allicin, it aids in disrupting the function of microorganisms in the body leading to their destruction.

In conclusion, garlic has many health benefits to offer, it is commonly used as seasoning or spic when cooking, and it adds flavour and taste to dishes. Garlic can also be consumed raw due to its health benefits, it is a versatile and flavourful ingredient.
