Hepatitis is more than a liver problem. When inflammation caused by hepatitis continues for a long time, it can affect how the liver functions and eventually damage other parts of the body.

Introduction

The liver is one of the most important organs in the human body. It helps process nutrients, remove waste products from the blood, produce bile for digestion, store certain nutrients and process medicines and other chemicals. When the liver becomes inflamed, these important functions can be affected.

Hepatitis simply means inflammation of the liver. It can be caused by viruses, alcohol, certain medicines or toxins, autoimmune conditions and other health problems. Viral hepatitis is one of the most important causes, with five major types known as hepatitis A, B, C, D and E.

Some forms of hepatitis are short-term and may resolve completely, while hepatitis B, C and D can become chronic and cause progressive liver damage. The effects may develop slowly, and some people may have hepatitis for years without knowing it because they have few or no symptoms.

How Does Hepatitis Affect the Body?

The effects of hepatitis depend on the type of hepatitis, whether the infection is acute or chronic, and how much damage has occurred in the liver.

1. It Causes Liver Inflammation

The first major effect of hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. When the liver becomes inflamed, its normal functions can become impaired. A person may experience tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal discomfort or fever.

Some people, however, may have no obvious symptoms at all. This is particularly important with chronic hepatitis B and C because a person can have the infection while appearing completely healthy.

2. It Can Cause Extreme Tiredness

Persistent fatigue is one of the symptoms that may occur with hepatitis. A person may feel unusually tired, weak or lacking in energy even after getting enough sleep.

This can happen during an acute hepatitis infection and may also occur in people with chronic liver disease.

Because tiredness has many possible causes, it does not necessarily mean that someone has hepatitis. Testing is needed to determine whether hepatitis is present.

3. It Can Affect the Skin and Eyes

One of the most recognizable signs of hepatitis is jaundice. Jaundice causes the skin and whites of the eyes to become yellow.

It occurs when bilirubin, a yellow substance produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells, builds up in the body.

People with hepatitis may also notice dark-coloured urine. Some may develop pale or clay-coloured stools.

4. It Can Affect Digestion

Hepatitis can affect the digestive system and may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and abdominal discomfort.

Some people may also experience diarrhoea, particularly with hepatitis A. These symptoms can easily be mistaken for food poisoning, malaria, stomach infection or another digestive problem. If they persist or occur together with jaundice or dark urine, medical evaluation is important.

5. It Can Cause Abdominal Pain

Some people with hepatitis experience discomfort or pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, where the liver is located.

The pain may be mild or uncomfortable rather than severe. It can occur together with nausea, poor appetite or fatigue.

Persistent abdominal pain should not automatically be blamed on hepatitis because many other conditions can cause similar symptoms.

What Happens When Hepatitis Becomes Chronic?

Hepatitis B, C and D can cause chronic infection. Over time, persistent inflammation can damage liver cells and cause scar tissue to build up.

1. It Can Cause Liver Scarring

Repeated or long-term liver injury can cause fibrosis, which means the development of scar tissue in the liver. As the damage progresses, extensive scarring can lead to cirrhosis.

Cirrhosis can interfere with the liver’s ability to perform its normal functions and may eventually become life-threatening.

2. It Can Lead to Liver Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is advanced scarring of the liver. As healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue, blood flow through the liver can become impaired and the organ may gradually lose its ability to function properly.

Chronic hepatitis B and C are major causes of liver cirrhosis worldwide.

3. It Can Increase the Risk of Liver Cancer

Long-term hepatitis B and C infections can increase the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of primary liver cancer.

This is one reason why early testing and appropriate medical care are so important, even when a person feels healthy.

Chronic hepatitis does not mean that someone will definitely develop cancer, but the risk is significantly higher when long-term liver damage occurs.

4. It Can Cause Liver Failure

Severe hepatitis can sometimes cause the liver to lose its ability to perform essential functions.

Acute severe hepatitis can, in some cases, progress to liver failure. This is a serious medical condition that requires urgent treatment.

Symptoms such as severe jaundice, confusion, unusual sleepiness, persistent vomiting or significant deterioration in health require immediate medical attention.

Hepatitis Can Affect More Than the Liver

Chronic hepatitis C, for example, can be associated with certain conditions affecting the blood vessels, kidneys, skin and nervous system. Hepatitis B can also be associated with health problems outside the liver.

This means that hepatitis should be viewed as a condition that can have wider effects on overall health, rather than simply a temporary liver infection.

Why Some People Do Not Know They Have Hepatitis

One of the most concerning aspects of hepatitis is that it can remain silent. Many people infected with viral hepatitis experience no symptoms or only mild symptoms. As a result, they may continue their normal activities without realizing that the virus is affecting their liver.

By the time symptoms become obvious, significant liver damage may already have occurred in some people. This is why testing is important, particularly for people who may have been exposed to hepatitis viruses.

Can Hepatitis Be Prevented?

Vaccination is an important way to prevent hepatitis B, while vaccines are also available for hepatitis A in many settings. Hepatitis B vaccination also protects against hepatitis D because hepatitis D requires hepatitis B infection to occur.

Good hygiene and access to safe food and drinking water are particularly important in preventing hepatitis A and E, which can spread through contaminated food or water.

Hepatitis B and C require different prevention measures because they are commonly transmitted through infected blood and certain other body fluids. Safe medical procedures, properly screened blood, sterile equipment and appropriate precautions can reduce the risk.

Can Hepatitis Be Treated?

Treatment depends on the type of hepatitis. Hepatitis A usually causes a short-term infection, and most people recover completely.

Chronic hepatitis B can be managed with antiviral medicines when treatment is indicated. Treatment can slow the progression of liver disease and reduce the risk of complications.

Hepatitis C is now curable in most people with appropriate antiviral treatment. WHO reports that modern antiviral medicines can cure more than 95% of people with hepatitis C infection.

This is why receiving a diagnosis should not automatically be viewed as a hopeless situation. Early testing and appropriate medical care can make a major difference.

When Should You Get Tested?

You should speak with a healthcare professional about hepatitis testing if you may have been exposed to the virus or have symptoms that could suggest liver disease.

Testing is particularly important because a person can have viral hepatitis without experiencing obvious symptoms.

If you notice yellowing of the eyes or skin, unusually dark urine, persistent fatigue, unexplained nausea, loss of appetite or abdominal discomfort, seek medical advice rather than attempting to diagnose yourself.

Final Thoughts

Hepatitis can affect the body in many ways, beginning with inflammation of the liver and potentially progressing to serious complications when certain types of infection become chronic.

It can cause tiredness, nausea, poor appetite, abdominal discomfort, jaundice and dark urine. More importantly, chronic hepatitis B and C can gradually cause liver scarring, cirrhosis and liver cancer if they are not appropriately diagnosed and managed.

The good news is that hepatitis is not a condition that people simply have to live with without help. Vaccines can prevent some forms, testing can identify infections that may otherwise remain hidden, and effective treatments are available for several types.
