In more serious situations, heat stroke can develop. This condition happens when the body temperature rises to dangerous levels and the body can no longer regulate heat effectively.

Limiting strenuous activities during peak afternoon heat and taking frequent breaks can help the body maintain a safe temperature.

Foods and Drinks That Help During Hot Weather

Certain foods can help the body stay hydrated and cool during hot weather. Fruits with high water content such as watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, and pineapples are excellent choices.

Vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, and celery also provide hydration and essential nutrients. Drinking water, coconut water, and natural fruit juices can help replenish fluids lost through sweat.

When to Seek Medical Attention

While mild heat discomfort can often be managed at home, severe symptoms should not be ignored. Persistent dizziness, confusion, fainting, or a very high body temperature may indicate heat stroke.

In such cases, immediate medical attention is necessary to prevent serious complications.

Heat is a normal part of life in many parts of Nigeria, but prolonged exposure can affect health if proper precautions are not taken. Staying hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and avoiding excessive sun exposure are simple yet effective ways to stay safe.
