Your skin is a vital part of your body, it performs many functions, it holds in fluid and prevents dehydration, it helps you feel sensations such as pain, and it stabilizes your body temperature. Skin issues are various conditions that can affect your skin, they can cause rashes and inflammation. There are several causes of this, it could be genetic, changes in skin products, reactions to medication, and what we eat. Let’s explore five (5) common skin disease and their remedies.

Acne; commonly located on the face, shoulder, chest, and upper back is an inflammatory skin condition that causes pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. It has to do with blocked follicles that lead to oil, bacteria, and dead skin build-up in your pores, which can lead to breakouts on the skin, painful cysts, and nodules. If left untreated, acne can darken and leave scars on the skin. Retinoids, antibiotics, and salicylic acids are topical acne treatments.

Eczema; is characterized by yellow or white patches, it can cause a red rash on light skin, and a purple, brown, or gray rash on dark skin. In areas affected, eczema can cause hair loss. Symptoms of eczema include itchiness, redness, swelling and sometimes oozing and crusting. Treatment options for eczema include moisturizers, topical corticosteroids for inflammations, and in severe cases systemic medications.

It is caused by abnormal blood vessels, triggers include spicy foods, sunlight stress, and alcoholic beverages. Treatment of rosacea includes gentle skin care, topical antibiotics, oral medications, and laser therapy.

Dermatitis; is inflammation of the skin due to contact with irritants such as soap and chemicals or allergens, it happens hours or days after contact with an allergen. Symptoms of this include redness, itching, rash, and blisters that ooze where your skin touches the irritating substance. In most cases, they aren’t severe but can be very itchy. One of the treatments for this is to avoid triggers, then for allergic reactions use corticosteroid creams and antihistamines.

Hyperpigmentation; is the excessive production of melanin leading to dark spots. It is caused by exposure to sun, inflammation, and hormonal changes. This condition is not painful, it just has to do with dark spots and uneven skin tone. Remedies for this include using sunscreens, topical treatments such as vitamin C and retinoids, chemical peels, and laser therapy.

It is important to note that maintaining a consistent skincare routine is vital to having clear skin, it is also important to consult your dermatologist before using any skin product.
