Social connections refer to the relationships and interactions that individuals have with others. These connections include connections with friends, family, acquaintances, colleagues, and community members. Social connections are a fundamental aspect of human life and it contributes to our emotional and mental well-being. Here are five (5) importance of social connections.

Mental Health

Social connections are vital for our mental health, interacting with others provides emotional support, reduces the feeling of loneliness, and helps combat stress, anxiety, and depression. It also provides a sense of happiness and satisfaction. Sharing your experiences and challenges with others provides a sense of comfort which in turn enhances our mental well-being.

Physical Health

According to studies, individuals with good social connections tend to have lower blood pressure, better immune function, and a reduced risk of chronic illnesses. Studies also suggest that people with supportive social connections tend to live longer, as a sense of purpose, belonging, and companionship derived from social interactions contributes to a healthier and longer life.

Cognitive function

Social engagement has been associated with better cognitive function and a lower risk of cognitive decline as people age.
